Leonardo Ulian

London, UK

A multidisciplinary artist working across various mediums, Leonardo Ulian explores the finer points of our contemporary networked reality through sculpture, installation, and sound. Born in Italy and now based in London, his work has been widely shown across Europe in both group settings and solo shows, while the artist’s evident preoccupation with technology has earned him commissions from some of the biggest names in tech, with his work on view at Facebook’s UK offices and Open AI’s San Francisco Headquarters. For this volume, the artist has created an incredibly intricate linked piece that spans every surface of the massive triple gatefold jacket. In the tradition of his World’s Between Webs series, a dense array of seemingly disparate objects are woven together in an arrangement that straddles a line between constellation and schematic, hieroglyph and blueprint. A vacuum tube, a battery, and an array of transistors are connected in seemingly absurd and non-functional ways. The artist likens these pieces to sand mandalas, with planned obsolescence subjecting technologies to the same ephemeral whims as those of the natural world.
