Visual Artist for Vol. 081: Tumbling Inside
GIZEM VURAL
New York, NY
Gizem’s illustrations exist in a space between the abstract and the literal.
Recognizable human figures traverse impossible geographies and interact with
symbols reminiscent of Kandinsky’s study of pure, non-referential objects. She uses
squares to represent either portals between spaces, or the passage of time as in
the frame of a comic book, or a combination between the two. Her work manages
to be extremely interpretive without feeling inaccessible, inviting viewers in with
welcoming color palettes and the soft textures of colored pencil. Get lost in her
incredible art for this month’s volume.
Gizem Vural was born in Istanbul and studied graphic design at Mimar Sinan
University of Fine Arts. Now based in New York City, Gizem has gathered an
impressive list of clients, including Bloomberg, Apple, The New York Times, and
The Guardian. She holds three medals from the Society of Illustrators and has
been recognized by American Illustrator numerous times. Beyond publications and
editorials, her work has also been featured in art exhibitions in New York, Boston,
and Portland.
