Visual Artist for Vol. 106: Dusk on the Mountain, Dawn in the Heart

Nicole Gustafsson

Vancouver, WA.

Nicole Gustafsson, who also works under the moniker Nimasprout, takes a multi-disciplinary approach to art making, with a practice encompassing everything from painting (with a preference for Acryla gouache) illustration, and design to mixed media sculpture. In each medium Nicole infuses the work with a keen sense of fantasy, adventure, and an abiding
love for the natural world that occasionally verges on the whimsical. With a parallel career
as a background designer for animated television and film, this proclivity towards fantastic scenarios is perhaps not a surprise, but Nicole’s work transcends the two-dimensionality of cartoons with a strong commitment to world building. Here are fully immersive alternate realities, with dayglo landscapes and fanciful sci-fi terrains, populated by curiously anthropomorphic woodland creatures. In the world of Nimasprout, the fully psychedelic is not incompatible with a sense of childlike wonder.
