Visual Artist for Vol. 117: Fountain of Sooth

Philip Lindeman

Utrecht, The Netherlands

The art of Fountain of Sooth features a surreal street scene that is both detailed and cartoonish, inviting and menacing. A minimally rendered hooded figure is only revealed as the grim reaper upon closer inspection; his left hand, holding an enormous rose, is skeletal. A gentle psychedelia pervades this fountain scene, where hidden figures both animal and human, terrestrial and supernatural, seem to merge into the landscape itself. Bohemian figures with guitars, berets, bikes, and other various signifiers of the artistically inclined class fill in the margins of this street scene, observing benignly. Floating towards the viewer are massive butterfly-like creatures who seem otherworldly even in the strange universe of
Lindeman’s imagination.

The depth of field, carefully limited color palette, and whimsical flair are all typical of the artist, an accomplished illustrator whose freelance work has landed him prestigious clients like Apple, The New York Times, and The New Yorker. His work also features on various murals around his hometown of Utrecht.
