Visual Artist for Vol. 133: A Golden State

Scott Yeskel

Los Angeles, CA

Scott Yeskel is a Los Angeles based Contemporary Realist and Abstract Artist. A native of Southern California, the artist finds inspiration in the landscapes and scenery of his hometown. His canvases frequently feature historic landmarks in and around Los Angeles, including restaurants and landscapes that will be instantly recognizable to locals; Casa Vega, VIPs Cafe, and Little Doms all appear in his body of work. Born and raised in Orange County, Yeskel trained at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, graduating in 2002. He found early success in San Francisco working as a landscaper painter, before putting roots down in Los Angeles. The artwork for this volume is populated by cacti, palm trees, coyotes and other denizens of the California landscape, but as with many of Yeskel’s canvases, humans are largely absent. If they do appear their faces are largely obscured or facing away from the viewer, adding a Hopper-esque air of mystery to his work.
