Visual Artist for Vol. 109: Blink and You'll Bliss It

Josep Prat Sorolla

Barcelona, Spain

So called “visual creator” Josep Prat Sorolla has traversed disciplines to the point where such a grand title is a necessity. By day, the artist also known as SEPE is in-demand as a creative director, animator, graphic designer, and even music video director, with clients spanning the worlds of art, music, culture, and international mega-brands like Apple, Netflix, and Playstation. To be sure, this is an artist who stays busy with commercial projects, but the beating heart of Josep Prat Sorolla’s work is his dayglow illustration practice; we’re proud to feature a few prime examples of that body of work here Volume 109. With a keen sense of composition, the artist manages to combine a variety of gestures into each brightly colored figure without succumbing to clutter. This kitchen sink approach encompasses elements of vaporwave (the doric columns of antiquity, a blanket of stars for a background) without being beholden to the narrow parameters of the genre. A joyful sense of play is evident in this work, which is rarely static–in the digital realm, these illustrations are often animated.
